Field Trip From the Moon

Geologist and former U.S. Sen. Harrison Schmitt (left), a member of the Apollo 17 lunar mission, displays a poster commemorating all the American astronauts who traveled to the Moon at a meeting of the Philadelphia Science and Space Club in David Rittenhouse Laboratory. Schmitt spent the afternoon of Feb. 7 at Penn, speaking to an audience of Penn students at the University Museum prior to meeting with the 9- to 13-year-old members of the Science and Space Club, which meets monthly at Penn. Schmitt spoke about his "Field Trip to the Moon," the significance of the Apollo lunar missions, and the geological research he carried out during his team's 75-hour visit, the last so far by humans. Schmitt also described the demanding preparations he and his fellow crew members made for the journey, and argued for renewed human exploration of the Moon, and ultimately Mars.
