Not too late to get in on the action

When the temperatures head downward, that's when the indoor action heats up in Penn's Recreation Department. Penn Recreation's fall intramural leagues begin play in mid-November, and there's still time for you to form a team with your fellow students, faculty and staff.

Each sport will have campus-wide, graduate-student, fraternity/sorority and freshman leagues for men and women, as well as a co-recreational league. Groups may join the leagues as teams by turning in their rosters and deposits at the Intramural Sports Office, 202 Hutchinson Gymnasium.Individual "free agents" may also join a league by signing up on lists in the office; teams will be formed from players on each list.

Leagues in the following sports will begin play next month:

  • BILLIARDS: Deadline for sign-up and submitting team rosters: Oct. 30. Play begins Nov. 16-17. No deposit required. First team captiains meeting to be announced.

  • BOWLING: Deadline for sign-up and submitting team rosters: Oct. 30. Play begins Nov. 18. Deposit to be determined. First team captains meeting to be announced.

Still time for tennis

Yes, it's too cold to play tennis outdoors, unless you're one of those polar-bear types. But Penn's Levy Tennis Pavilion offers the chance for you to learn or improve your game year-round. Penn Recreation's beginner classes develop basic skills, including stroke development, racquet control, hand-eye coordination and mobility on the court. Intermediate classes build on the basics through group drills emphasizing footwork and point strategies, and include singles and doubles play. All instructors are certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association.

New eight-session classes start Nov. 2. Beginner classes meet from 11 a.m. to noon and intermediate classes from noon to 1 p.m. on either Mondays and Wednesdays (Nov. 2-25) or Tuesdays and Thursdays (Nov. 3-Dec. 3). The registration fee is $50; for students, $25.
