$10m for scholars

The Annenberg Foundation has given $10 million to Penn, made possible by the Hon. Walter H. Annenberg and his wife, the Hon. Leonore Annenberg, for undergraduate scholarships and other academic priorities, Penn President Judith Rodin announced Oct. 30.

The Annenberg Foundation money includes a $5 million challenge grant for undergraduate scholarships and related recruitment activities, contingent upon the University raising matching funds.

The University will establish an Annenberg Scholars Program for "truly outstanding young men and women with demonstrated leadership abilities and financial need," Rodin said.

The program will be initiated by identifying, recruiting and supporting "outstanding students" who will enter Penn next fall as members of the class of 2003.

"This challenge to us is a marvelous affirmation of the confidence the Annenberg Foundation has in Penn and its students," Rodin said.

An additional $5 million will endow a chair for a scholar in political science and establish an Institute for the Study of Democratic Institutions.
