Marc Buckingham on Great Management

Marc Buckingham, author of “First Break All the Rules,” lets you in on the secrets of being a great manager. After conducting more than 80,000 interviews over 25 years, Buckingham has found that great managers do not hesitate to break virtually every rule held sacred by conventional wisdom. They do not believe that, with enough training, a person can achieve anything he sets his mind to. They do not try to help people overcome their weaknesses. They consistently disregard the golden rule. And yes, they even play favorites. This broadcast includes a 30-minute Q&A session with Buckingham.

You’ll Soon Get the Hang of It

This video examines the theory and practice of one-to-one training and explains why it is important for managers to have the skills to teach people in their care.

Through various workplace scenarios—in a warehouse, an office and a hotel—the video explores the psychology of why people want to learn and what managers can do to help them. The lessons show managers how to put the training into context, break the process into digestible chunks and ensure the trainee practices at every step.
