Genomics grant

The Penn Genomics Institute and the Penn Center for Bioinformatics recently received a planning grant that will help them stay on the cutting edge of technology. For five years, PGI and PCBI will receive $250,000 annually to lay the groundwork for a national center for comparative and integrative computational genomics at Penn. The National Institutes of Health grant will go toward administrative development and piloting seed grants for other related areas of research.

Toll hikes funds

With help from Robert I. Toll L’66, the number of students who benefit from the Albert and Sylvia Toll Scholarship Fund at Penn Law School will triple from five to 15 next year. Toll, who established the gift in 1991 in honor of his parents, recently made a sizable gift to expand this scholarship.

Toll is a member of Penn Law’s Board of Overseers and chairman and CEO of the Huntingdon Valley, Pa., luxury homebuilder Toll Brothers, Inc.

Sustained effort

The Wharton School’s Campaign for Sustained Leadership came to a successful close, as donors surpassed the $425 million goal of the fundraising initiative, giving more than $445 million. Since the campaign’s inception in 2001, funds have been allotted to facility improvement and construction, academic programs, faculty support and research and student financial aid. In that time the school built John M. Huntsman Hall, named for the 1959 Wharton grad and chairman of its board of overseers.

Thirty-five percent of the monies raised came from MBA alumni, 32 percent was donated by undergraduate alumni, 18 percent came from corporations and foundations and 15 percent was awarded by other individuals.
