Ahead of the Current: Jeff Daniels

In a film career spanning three decades, Jeff Daniels has played a tortured artist/diner owner ("Pleasantville") and a Civil War hero ("Gettysburg"), a fumbling small-town doctor ("Arachnophobia") and a self-absorbed professor ("Terms of Endearment"), an embittered novelist ("The Squid & The Whale") and a SWAT team leader ("Speed"). In all, he's appeared in more than 50 movies and TV shows—which makes us wonder when, exactly, he's found the time to be a songwriter. But apparently he has, because Daniels is on the road right now, performing his songs—autobiographical tunes that he has described as his "diaries"—for audiences around the country as part of his "Live & Unplugged" tour. All proceeds from the shows support the Purple Rose Theater Company, a community playhouse founded by Daniels in his hometown of Chelsea, Michigan.

The Jeff Daniels "Live & Unplugged" tour stops at World Cafe Live on Sunday, Oct. 22. Tickets start at $25. For more information, go to http://www.worldcafelive. com or call 215-222-1400.
