Grant Lee Phillips

Grant Lee Phillips was once the frontman for the acclaimed (but largely unknown) indie folk-rock band Grant Lee Buffalo, and won praise for his soulful voice and beautiful tunes. Along with Joey Peters on drums and Paul Kimble on bass, Buffalo released four albums, including the 1994’s lush “Mighty Joe Moon.”

Despite a quality body of work, Grant Lee Buffalo never got full support from their major record label and never managed to break free of their cult status. Out of frustration, Phillips disbanded Buffalo in early 1999.

Since then, he’s continued with a solo career, including the 2000 release, “Ladies Love Oracle”—which was first released over the internet and the 2006 album, “Nineteeneighties,” which featured acoustic covers of songs by the Pixies, R.E.M., Echo & the Bunnymen and New Order.

Director Todd Haynes even called upon Phillips to write and record songs for the lead character in his 1998 film, “Velvet Goldmine.” Recently, Phillips collaborated with Los Angeles-based Helios Dance Theater on “The Lotus Eaters”—a modern interpretation of Homer's The Odyssey.

These days, Phillips is touring in support of his new release, “Little Moon” on Yep Roc Records. He takes the stage at World Cafe Live on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets run $22 to $34. For more information, go to www.worldcafelive.com.
