Rising sophomore Maalik Reynolds of Penn’s men’s track and field team will represent Team USA at the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletic Championships, held July 22 to 24 in Miramar, Fla.

Reynolds was one of four Quakers to participate at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., the selection meet for the Pan American Junior Athletic Championships. He passed at the first two heights and missed just once over the next three heights. He was one of just three competitors to cleanly pass 7 feet, 1-and-a-half inches.

Reynolds completed a tremendous freshman campaign. He qualified for the Indoor NCAA Championships in March, but was unable to compete due to illness. He holds the school record in the indoor and outdoor high jump, and was named First-Team All-Ivy during the indoor and outdoor track seasons after he claimed both Heptagonal Championships. He was also named the Co-Most Outstanding Performer at Outdoor Heps, in addition to claiming the indoor IC4A title and Penn Relays crown.

Reynolds was the only Ivy Leaguer to reach the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Finals in the high jump. He was the first male athlete at Penn to reach the finals of the NCAA Outdoor Championships since decathletes Mike Hall (2007) and Max Westman (2008) did so in back-to-back years.

Along with sophomore Leslie Kovach, Reynolds was named an All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He was a First Team honoree; Kovach earned honorable mention recognition. Reynolds is the first Penn men’s outdoor All-American since Courtney Jaworski earned the honor in the 800 meters in 2005.
