Penn provides access to gym memberships

By this time in January, many people have already abandoned their New Year’s resolutions to stick with an exercise routine. But, Penn provides lots of programs to keep employees on track to better health, including discounts on gym memberships.

Suzanne Smith, health promotion program administrator in the Division of Human Resources (HR), says people often sign up for a gym near their workplace or home, depending on what’s most convenient.

“Some people prefer to hit the gym on their lunch hour or right after work before going home,” she says, “so for them, a gym closer to work might be more appropriate.” Penn’s own Pottruck Health and Fitness Center provides an easy option for many faculty and staff to do just that.

For faculty and staff who prefer exercising before work, Smith suggests joining a neighborhood gym. If a facility is out of the way, people are less likely to go.

HR's partnership with GlobalFit, a provider of healthy living benefits, can help Penn employees find nearby fitness centers where they’ll enjoy reduced membership prices. GlobalFit guarantees participants the lowest possible membership prices to thousands of local and national fitness centers, including Sweat, Curves, and Philadelphia Sports Clubs, says Smith.

Details on membership at the Pottruck Center can be found on the Department of Recreation’s website.

Faculty and staff can register with GlobalFit through a link on HR’s website. A PennKey is required. Registration is free, and locating a gym is easy: Simply enter a zip code.
