World music showcased at Penn Museum summer concerts

The P.M. @ Penn Museum Summer Nights are back for another season, offering the after-work crowd international music jams on Wednesday evenings, and happy hour refreshments to help them get over the midweek hump.

The concert series, now in its third year, features a variety of musical acts, including the funky Zydeco-A-Go-Go, the Brazilian band Minas, the eclectic sounds of Klingon Klez, and the acclaimed ensemble Animus. The outdoor concerts are held in the gardens of Penn Museum’s Stoner Courtyard, 3260 South St.

On June 20, the Philadelphia-based group Barakka will kick off the series with the melodic tunes of Turkish folk rock.

The garden bar of the Museum’s Pepper Mill Café will offer light supper and beverages, including beer and wine.

“Last year we averaged 250 people per performance,” says Tena Thomason, assistant director for special events at the Penn Museum. “The Pepper Mill Café themes its menu to match the music. If there’s a Turkish band, there are Turkish appetizers.”

Thomason says several Latin bands were added to this year’s lineup to coincide with the Museum’s “MAYA 2012: Lords of Time” exhibition. She says the Museum is also inviting a few select street vendors to participate in the events, including a popular ebru (marbling) artist who sells silk scarves, who will return this year.

For those who want to also see what is inside the Museum, the galleries stay open until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. The Museum entry fee is $5. For $15.50, guests can enjoy the concert and tour “MAYA 2012.” A discounted parking rate of $10 is available in Garage 7, adjacent to the Museum, after 5 p.m. General admission to the Museum and the concert is free for PennCard holders and Museum members.

“We’re right here on campus, very accessible to the train,” Thomason says. “People can meet friends, and stop by after work for a wonderful happy hour vibe.”

P.M. @ Penn Museum Summer Nights runs through Aug. 29. Concerts will be moved inside the Museum when it rains.
