#PennCraves Food Truck serves hot and fresh meals-to-go

As temperatures get colder and bellies get a little grumblier, a new Penn food truck is crafting hot and fresh meals-to-go that aim to satisfy even the most persistent cravings.

As temperatures get colder and bellies get a little grumblier, a new Penn food truck is crafting hot and fresh meals-to-go that aim to satisfy even the most persistent cravings.

The new, aptly named #PennCraves Food Truck is now serving up seasonal, artisanal grilled cheese sandwiches, soups, and more at Pennovation Works (formerly known as the South Bank) at 3401 Grays Ferry Ave.

“Everybody loves grilled cheese and soup, especially on cold winter days like we’ve been experiencing,” says Stephen Scardina, resident district manager for Bon Appétit, Penn’s on-site restaurant and catering company. “But we’ve also incorporated different types of Philadelphia street foods to meet the needs and wants of our customers [at Pennovation Works.]”

The menu is anchored by classics such as a three-cheese sandwich made with sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, and muenster cheeses, along with twists on traditions such as a goat cheese and cremini mushroom sandwich layered with shredded kale. Customers can warm up with a cup of old-fashioned tomato soup or one of the daily rotating soup options.

The truck also features two types of French fries, Philly-style street tacos with lime-jicama slaw, and a weekly rotating fresh salad menu.

Scardina says the food truck strives to use local ingredients when available, including pork from Country Time Farm in Hamburg, Pa., beef from Roseda Beef in Monkton, Md., and mushrooms from Basciani Mushrooms in mushroom-capital Kennett Square, Pa.

“We keep in mind that that it’s important to have vegan and vegetarian options for those who have that preference, and so far we have been able to meet customized requests from the community,” Scardina says.

Though the truck is currently exclusively available to customers at Pennovation Works, Scardina says Penn hopes to use the truck in the future for special catered campus events.

The #PennCraves Food Truck is open for business Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Menu items range from $2 to $7. Though the truck is currently cash-only, Scardina says credit cards will be accepted for payment in the near future.
