Yay, summer! Are there any outdoor exercise activities at Penn?

Dear Benny,
During the winter months, I don’t mind going to the gym to exercise. But now that the weather is warm, I want to spend more time outside. Are there any outdoor places on campus where I can do activities to stay fit?
— In the Great Outdoors

Dear Outdoors,
Your question came at the right time, considering June is Employee Health and Wellness Month. That means the Division of Human Resources (HR) is offering lots of good ways to get healthy—and some of them do get you moving outside.

On Friday, June 19, join HR for a 1-mile walk, which starts at noon on Locust Walk. There’s also an outdoor yoga class that will run at noon on College Green on Wednesday, June 24. For more details on those and other activities, both indoor and outdoor, go to www.hr.upenn.edu/myhr/registration/events (PennKey login required).

The campus is a great place to get in a lunchtime (or before- or after-work) walk. You can join the Penn Walking Program, which is organized through HR, and walk along or in a group, on a mapped course, or on a path of your own creation.

To get started, visit www.hr.upenn.edu/myhr/worklife/healthy/walking/routes for a sampling of walking routes in and around campus. Routes include half-mile to slightly more than a mile-and-a-half loops.

If you’re interested in venturing a bit off campus, participate in an Outdoor Adventure from Penn’s Department of Recreation. Activities vary from a weekend hike along the West Rim Trail from Friday, June 26, to Sunday, June 28, to a waterfall day hike on Saturday, July 25, in Ricketts Glen State Park in north central Pennsylvania.

There’s also a canoe paddling weekend on some of Delaware’s waterways from Saturday, July 11, to Sunday, July 12, and a canoe day trip to the Pine Barrens on Sunday, July 26.

For information on all outdoor adventures, visit the Penn Rec website.
