Amazon delivery center opens on Penn’s campus

Receiving a package from Amazon.com just got easier with a new pick-up location on Penn’s campus.

Faculty, staff, and students can now have their Amazon purchases sent to Amazon@Penn, a full-service package delivery center in the 1920 Commons building on Locust Walk at 38th Street.

The center makes it more convenient and secure for receiving packages, says Doug Berger, executive director for the Business Services Division, who oversees Residential and Hospitality Services.

“We’re estimating between 50,000 and 60,000 packages that now go to our residents by various delivery companies will now come here,” he says. “Our students will then have a central place focused on Amazon packages.”

In a simple process, when the package arrives, Amazon alerts the customer with a text or email, sending along a bar code that needs to be scanned at the center’s lockers. When the customer scans the bar code, the locker door opens with the package inside.

If an item isn’t suitable, returns can be made for free at the center’s return station.

Amazon Student and Prime members receive additional shipping benefits, including free same-day delivery for orders placed by noon, and free one-day pickup for orders placed by 10 p.m.

The pick-up location is Amazon’s first at an Ivy League university, and Penn’s center is the first that features communal work space with what Amazon calls, “interactive media pods,” where customers have a comfortable space to watch TV, play music, or connect a laptop or mobile device to TV monitors for studying or collaborating.

“This is a successful continuation of our transformation of 1920 Commons,” said Chris Bradie, associate vice president of Business Services, who led the project team. “We knew if we could have a community area that was as innovative and interactive as the service delivery side of the space, we would have an exciting new destination on campus. And now that it is finished, it’s clear that vision was realized.”

Amazon@Penn launched with a soft opening on May 10. The center’s grand opening will be held on Friday, May 13, at 10 a.m., with giveaways and demonstrations on how to use the facility.
